With You I Feel Infinity celebrates Queer Love, This sculpture responds to ongoing injustices toward women and anti-trans legislation. Within the gallery space, two transparent figures hold each other, exuding affection and filled with unmoving confetti, waiting to erupt and flutter. Queerness represents an existence frequently trivialized by politicization because it inherently disrupts the patriarchal hierarchy. Liberation and bodily freedom lie at the core of the Queer experience; they stand as an antithesis to patriarchy, which seeks only domination and control. This sculpture embodies the defiant nature of Queerness Love, a transparent, non-conforming form that embraces all light and color in the world, an organic openness to the universe unbounded by bodily limitations.
The pink confetti within these figures remains in stasis, a living experience yearning for “true” liberation, a repressed affection longing to be free once more. This symbolizes the current struggle of many Queer people of color and women, reflecting a persistent anxiety and fear of societal reprisal. On October 31, 2024, the Alberta Government introduced new policies (the Health Statutes Amendment Act and Education Amendment Act, 2024) that deliberately reject Trans youth’s access to life-saving care and education.
For an institution of power to attack a vulnerable group, depriving them of bodily autonomy, is an injustice. Linell Cady describes Love as a connective force that unites individuals, transforming separate identities into a shared, integrated existence. This connection transcends isolation, generating a broader sense of life that rises above individual identities and concerns (qtd. in bell 35). Gender-affirming care is life-saving. It allows one to fully express their truth, enabling authentic affection toward others. With You I Feel Infinity yearns to fully express this love to release all repressed energies and senses of being, filling the world with joy and affection and becoming fully, freely who they are meant to be.
With You I Feel Infinity was presented at the Christine Klassen Gallery, On November 2024. The sculpture was produced as part of a group exhibition called After Breaking, Building Up. This show was curated by Kurtis Lesick in their 3 month thematic residency called Breaking Aesthetics which was held at the Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary Alberta.
